The plan under consideration calls for cuts for people who pay income taxes or who claim the earned-income credit. It would allow businesses to write off major losses incurred in 2008, as well as 2009 losses, retroactively to reduce tax obligations dating back five years, the newspaper said.

2009-01-02 Paris Beacon News News Chrisman council OKs temporary living arrangement

Hoult directed a question to Dole regarding progress in getting Dr. Jeffrey Hatcher to either fix or demolish a building at the corner of Illinois and Madison. The three-story structure, dating from 1876, is the tallest building on the downtown square and is believed to be the oldest commercial building in the city as it is the only survivor of a fire that destroyed the west side of the square.

Acting upon a suggestion from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, the council agreed to install an emergency generator to keep the city and rsquo;s water plant operational during extended power failures.

Junior Gerald Henderson was picked to the ACC and rsquo;s preseason all-conference team and was widely figured to be ready for an offensive explosion this season. As always, Henderson has had his moments. Last weekend and rsquo;s 19-point outburst against Xavier and a 20-point second half against Southern Illinois in the 2K Sports Classic semifinals come to mind. But he is only averaging 11. 5 points per game, which ranks him 32nd in the conference in scoring. As of now, Henderson will not be an all-ACC selection at season and rsquo;s end. But the Blue Devils hope his offensive production spikes during league play as they continue to prove themselves as a top-10 team nationally.

2008-12-27 Chicago Daily Observer A Historical Perspective on Senatorial Appointments

But the Rodiot, not surprisingly, has no grasp of history. Vacant Illinois Senate seats are not sold, nor are they given away for nothing. Instead, theyre bartered, and used as a payback for prior services rendered. They are not auctioned and used as a payoff for future contributions made. Dating back to 1900, three Illinois governors have made Senate appointments, and all were a payback, not a payoff.

Charles Deneen was appointed by Governor Len Small to complete the final few months of lame duck Medill McCormicks term in the US Senate. Deneen, a former governor and states attorney, had beaten McCormick for the GOP nomination and later won the general election. McCormick, who had been over confident in terms of his own re-election prospects, never bothered to return to Illinois to campaign. Deneen narrowly won the primary. The despondent McCormick committed suicide a few months later. Deneen was appointed promptly and began serving in advance of the start of his own term in 1925.

S wrong-way run came before my time, but I was there to see a Washington card stunt spell out Caltech, and later to see Caltech and MIT light up on the scoreboard when the participating teams were UCLA and Illinois. It was refreshing to see Pasadenas pomp punctured by some brainy future scientists.

It was a game that celebrated the centennial of college football, dating back to an 1869 contest between Princeton and Rutgers.
