Charles Deneen was appointed by Governor Len Small to complete the final few months of lame duck Medill McCormicks term in the US Senate. Deneen, a former governor and states attorney, had beaten McCormick for the GOP nomination and later won the general election. McCormick, who had been over confident in terms of his own re-election prospects, never bothered to return to Illinois to campaign. Deneen narrowly won the primary. The despondent McCormick committed suicide a few months later. Deneen was appointed promptly and began serving in advance of the start of his own term in 1925.
